Gary White’s Journey with CELF
Seventeen years ago, Gary and Trina White began Waikato Construction Management Limited (WCML) as a modest shed-building venture. Today, WCML stands as a respected provider of design and build services across the Waikato, a testament to unwavering dedication, robust systems, and, above all, a team united by shared values and a positive attitude.
For Gary, the journey has always been about more than business growth. It’s been about learning, evolving, and finding ways to give back. This commitment to growth led WCML to sponsor Gary’s participation in The Community and Enterprise Leadership Foundation’s (CELF) Leadership Programme, alongside Chris Graham from The Te Awamutu Boxing Academy. The goal was clear: to strengthen Gary’s leadership and, in turn, grow leadership within a community organisation for lasting impact.
Reflecting on his CELF experience, Gary shares,
“There is no doubt I have changed, and for the better. I’ve become more confident and appreciative of different perspectives. The connections I’ve made and the insights I’ve gained into a range of businesses and organisations - each facing their own challenges and opportunities - have been invaluable.”
As a naturally reserved leader, Gary admits to some hesitation about the CEO title. Yet, through CELF, he’s grown more comfortable in this role, finding confidence in his own approach.
“I now prioritise empowering and trusting my team in decision-making. This has brought greater clarity across our business about the qualities needed to build the right culture and achieve our goals.”
One of the most powerful lessons for Gary was witnessing the dedication of local community organisations, who were so committed to their purpose, often while facing significant challenges.
“Seeing their commitment, even when resources are tight, has only strengthened our resolve to support the community we serve,” Gary says.
WCML continues to back local initiatives, such as Te Awamutu Youth Development, and recently took part in the “Pork Pie Run,” raising funds for KidsCan. For Gary, these efforts are an extension of his own growth as a leader and the connections forged through CELF.
“There is clear evidence that my personal growth as a leader, and the connections I’ve made, have had a positive impact on our business and enhanced our ability to influence and benefit our wider community.”
Gary’s journey with CELF is a reminder that authentic leadership is about leaning into your strengths, staying true to your values, and creating wider positive change within your team, your business, and your community.
