Leaning Into Authenticity

How CELF Shaped Heidi's Path to CEO

When Heidi Gleeson joined CELF's Leadership Programme in 2023, she was stepping into uncharted territory. Two years into her role at True Colours Children's Health Trust, she was preparing to succeed the founder as CEO—a daunting but exciting responsibility. While her passion for True Colours was undeniable, she needed the confidence to lead boldly and authentically.

CELF arrived at the perfect moment. Through robust discussions, hands-on learning with business leaders, and deep self-reflection, Heidi discovered that strong leadership isn't about changing who you are—it's about leaning into your strengths, staying connected to your values, and leading with authenticity.

Learning from businesses across Hamilton, she witnessed firsthand the many ways leadership can look and feel, which strengthened her confidence that her own style was not only valid but powerful.

"Though there was no doubt I had the passion for the organisation and work we do, I also needed to prove to myself that I could take True Colours forward," Heidi explains.

CELF gave her exactly that validation. Immersed in a network of courageous leaders and local businesses, she found reassurance in her own strengths.

"CELF reinforced that the strengths I show up with are solid. I don't have to change; I am who I am. It showed how I can lean into my strengths, while being aware of the flip side of them."

The programme also pushed her to reflect on the kind of leader she wanted to become.

"It reinforced connection to purpose and values, and how when you live those authentically, and can lead your team authentically, you can do almost anything. That extends to how you show up for family and friends, and even how you interact with strangers or the guy who makes your coffee at your favourite café."

Beyond the leadership insights, Heidi discovered something unexpected: community. The relationships built within her CELF cohort, whom she describes as "arguably the best and strongest," became a source of ongoing support and inspiration. Robust discussions, shared insights, and even invigorating tangents with facilitators reminded her that leadership thrives on connection.

By June 2025, years of careful succession planning became reality. Cynthia, the founder, stepped down as CEO, and Heidi stepped up—confident, prepared, and grounded in her purpose. The transition was seamless for her team, the families they support, and their wider network of funders and partners.

The lessons from CELF continue to ripple through every aspect of Heidi's life, reinforcing her belief that thriving communities are built when people support each other and give generously of themselves.

"CELF strengthened my confidence in my style of leadership, and that it's ok. We all do it slightly differently."

Today, as CEO of True Colours, Heidi embodies the kind of courageous, values-driven leadership that CELF exists to cultivate. Her journey demonstrates what happens when leaders are given the space, tools, and confidence to lean into who they already are—creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond any single programme or organisation.
